In the performance piece Above Ground Burial, I enter the woods where the ashes of a friend’s mother have been laid to rest with soil collected from the family cemetery where my grandparents’ ashes are buried in Livingston, TN. The soil is mixed with sawdust collected from sanding my tree pieces in Cumulative Grief and after washing myself I apply the mixture to my body in a sort of burial ritual in which I seek to feel bodily closeness to my grandparents and other ancestors.
